Mad River Valley Map and Guide

The MRPA and Map Adventures, Portland, Maine have collaborated on the production of a new Mad River Valley map and resource guide. The new map is an essential guide to outdoor recreation in the Mad River Valley for hikers, runners, bicyclists, swimmers, skiers, snowshoers and fishermen as well as the casual traveler. The new map is 36% larger than the previous map, covering more area to the west and north including greater portions of the Towns of Duxbury, Moretown, Waitsfield, Warren and Fayston. It now includes the western face of the Green Mountains of Central Vermont and Camel’s Hump, Vermont’s popular iconic summit. Additional resource information includes publicly- owned lands, parks, public swim holes, scenic views, public restrooms, schools, libraries, town facilities and more.
Another popular feature of the guide is the suggested walking routes and trail descriptions found on the reverse side. Each suggested route is highlighted on the map and rated for difficulty so that one can easily find a suitable route. The guide also lists inns and lodges in the area as well as other services that are important to recreation such as outdoor gear shops, locations for “lunches to go,” trail etiquette, safety tips and emergency phone numbers. A new locator grid, mileage markers, contours and elevation makes the map more functional than its predecessors.
We worked hard to acknowledge trails that have the landowner’s permission and struck a good balance between what we could map and what we chose not to. Our goal is to continue to develop new landowner relationships and new trails and, when possible, add them to the third edition of this valuable community guide, which we hope to update in three years. We have added several new trails such as the Kingsbury Bridge Greenway in Warren, the Westside section of the Mad River Path in Waitsfield and several new trails in the Phen Basin area of Camel’s Hump State Park in Fayston.
The map is a great way to discover the good nature of the Mad River Valley. They are available for purchase for $4.95 each at the Chamber of Commerce in the Valley’s welcome center – the General Wait House, 4061 Main Street, Waitsfield – The Warren Store, Tempest Book Shop and other retail locations in and around the Mad River Valley.
